This idealic place is the perfect recipe for when you want to get away from it all to relax, recoup and recharge.
Matanivusi Surf Resort is 3 km from the village of Vunaniu. Suva, the main business centre and capital, is a 1hr 30 min drive to the east from Matanivusi Surf Resort and Nadi International Airport is a pleasant two hour drive, passing through sugar farms, Sigatoka Town on the river and Fijian villages along the spectacular Coral Coast where the highway hugs the shoreline revealing picturesque bays and reefs.
The Australian owners and developers, Brian & Donna McDonald, found this amazing piece of coastline some 15 years ago. Around the kava bowl with Vunaniu Village Elders they mentioned it would be a great place for a surf resort. There were 2 good right hand breaks on the outer reefs that fringed around turquoise waters of a lagoon. The area also boasted a creek and a natural forest edging down to the white sandy beach. The raw natural beauty of the area indicated that a responsible development philosophy was needed, as such the resort has been planned as an eco-friendly resort. The principles being to make as little impact as possible during construction, implement best sustainable operating practices and ensure integration with the local Fijian villagers.
As a result of their philosophy and hard work, Matanivusi is the first Resort in the world to be certified “Sustainable Surf Resort” by STOKE Certified, an offshoot of the Centre for Surf Research based at San Diego State University. A rigorous analysis of 142 standards were completed including environment, social, economic and cultural.
Minimal clearing was done to allow for the main building and the 6 duplex style bures (12 rooms). Situated just metres from the sandy beach the buildings are a metre above ground level. Using post and beam construction there has been minimal disturbance to the area. The native vegetation along the beachfront has been maintained and new plantings will protect the beach from any erosion & rising storm surges. There is also a natural rock platform that acts as a buffer to trap the sand on the beach and this adds to the already natural surrounds.
The resort utilises the natural water resources on offer and thus in place is an important strategy for water conservation. The resort collects rainwater in tanks for as much use throughout its property as possible. Recycling programmes are in place to ensure that all waste is sorted and disposed of through commercial contractors. A solar generated energy system has been installed to produce the power to the resort and neighbouring Fijian homes.
Matanivusi Resort is also involved with Educational programmes for the local primary and secondary schools. This is a work in progress and are being worked on constantly to ensure a long term benefit to the community.
Most of the resort staff come from the village and are very happy to invite you to their village homes for a kava session. If you do go to the village, be warned that there are some cultural traditions that must be observed. Resort staff will be only too happy to explain traditions and cultures to you.
A yoga/function centre will be completed by the end of may 2015 which is perfect for weddings, special functions and small meetings. Yoga under the amazing Banyan Tree is an experience in itself.

Matanivusi Surf Resort has been designed by award winning Architect, Paul Uhlmann a surfer from the Gold Coast, Australia.
