This place puts in a very strong case for the world's heaviest wave. The wave Teahupo'o is found in the tiny town by the same name along the Southern end of Tahiti Iti. Just drive to the end of the road and you've found it.
Teahupo'o is the sort of place where you could simply sit in the boat and watch insane cavernous barrels explode over the reef. It will normally a lot bigger here than any of the surrounding passes as Teahupo'o faces directly into the prevailing Southwest groundswell and that there's a complete lack of a continental shelf in front of the break. Regardless of the size of the swell, the wave pretty much breaks in the same position. This creates a below sea level monster that is beyond anyone's wildest imaginations.
Depending on the angle of the swell, the wave either forms an inescapable closeout or a flawless barrel. Although regardless of angle the ride at Teahupo'o is a short one. A barrel and one turn is all you really have time for.
When it's small Teahupo'o is a perfect wave and the average surfer can sample these waves. However once it reaches six foot it's a different game all together.
